I mean literally in this episode Damon thinks he is killing a Soldier that is haunting him, by burning him in the casket, but little does Damon know that its actually Elena in the coffin and he kills her. I mean this such sad news because we were all hoping for a happy reunion at the end of the Vampire Diaries sequel where Damon finally ends up with Elena and they grow old together, but nope all our dreams were crushed..... After he burns Elena it symbolised that there is nothing that is going to hold Damon back from becoming the true monster that he was meant to be. Stephan realises that he will never be happy unless he kills Damon! Yet Stephan is not willing to let Damon go. Damon fails to tell Stephan what he did to Elena after he tortured the information out of Tyler .......
